Faith and Spirituality in the therapeutic space?
I continue to bear witness to clients who have thrived in sessions when provided with a non-judgemental space to talk about what’s been helpful or harmful in the context of their faith and spirituality.
What I have noticed recently is a new range of clients between the ages of 18+ to 30, open and curious to experiencing spiritual encounters.
For instance, I am hearing more and more about desires to connect with the spirit world or hopes to encounter God. There’s a seeker appetite that delves into paid visits to psychics for relationship advice or going to church to find purpose and direction from God. These are often clients seeking ways to express their appetite for the spiritual, not scared of it.
So in arriving at my thoughts on what I believe the ultimate goal of faith and spirituality in therapy is, comes from the understanding that it's perhaps not to see them as competing forces in the path to healing and wellness but complementary approaches that can coexist as they often address different dimensions of the same experience, and each are able to support the other.
Therapy often focuses on the clients inner world to see how their thoughts, feelings and physical sensations react to emotional distress and how to manage them. What matters is finding a skilled therapist who can hold your spiritual curiosity with genuine respect, not polite tolerance, but real understanding of what it means to you specifically, especially if you believe you're experiencing something close to a spiritual awakening.
A personal belief coming from moments of reflection and sessions with clients is simply this...."You can't heal from what you don't understand". Therapy with a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist can work in moving your experiences of feeling stuck to mobilising, where you begin to make choices on how you want to live your life.
If you've been carrying too much for far too long, and this resonates, I offer informal conversations in a safe, non-judgemental space where you'll be able to explore your faith and spirituality and make sense of your experiences in a way that feels authentic and aligned with your identity and hopes for a life of joy driven by purpose.
